A sound like a hard drive or optical drive "seeking" is emanating from motherboard

I put my computer together last night. This is my first build, so of course I, the unexperienced one, had to run into some problems. I'm hearing this high pitched noise, that appears to be coming from the motherboard. I tried unplugging the case fan and the noise was still there. I quickly unplugged the CPU cooler, noise was still there. I put my ear right next to hard drive and the optical drive and the sound was not originating in either place. The weird part of this, is that you'd think it was a hard drive or something. The high pitched noise will start clicking, almost like a seeking noise of a hard drive or optical drive, when the computer is under load, i.e. booting up. But, I'm almost certain that it's not coming from a drive! It seems to emanate from the heart of the motherboard! What do I do? Have you run into this problem before? What do you suggest? Thank you very much

Is it, by any chance, an AN35N Ultra? Those have been known to have high pitch whines...nothing like clicking though. It originates from those donut shaped things with the copper coils around them.

The motherboard is an Epox EP-8KDA3J. What is an AN35N Ultra?

The coil wrapped donuts might be the source. As for the clicking, we just may not be speaking the same language. Let me give an example. If I click on an icon, the whine will temporarily stop, like the computer is accessing something. I call this clicking, because it reminds me of a hard drive seeking if I open something.

If the coil wrapped donuts are the problem, is there anything I can do to stop it?

Damn, I just bought that board and haven't had time to hook it up yet. 🙂

As for what you can do. I just returned an AN35N Ultra (a popular NF2 board made by Shuttle) because it had that problem. I've heard of people putting something on them and fixing the problem.

I emailed a guy at Epox, and he said to return the board. So, I guess I'm going to return the board! 🙂
