I read the first 3 books last spring / summer. Book one was great, book 2 was awesome, and book 3 was fucking fantastic. And then I started book 4 "A Feast for Crows."

I just can't get into it! I've read the first 3 chapters ~4 times and I get so bored and detached. I don't care about these new characters and the new plots. I want to read about my favorite characters (Tyrion, Jon, Arya, and Daenerys). I know that Martin split this book into 2 parts, and the next book revolves around these other people, but fuck...come on! WTF!

Is book 5 good? Is it worth it to suffer through book 4? I'm about ready to call it quits and abandon the whole series. :|

Kinda got some bad news for you. Even with lots of Tyrion, Jon and Daenerys in A Dance with Dragons it's not really any better than A Feast for Crows. The 2 books are buried under an avalanche of POV chapters of minor characters and plotlines that go nowhere. I muddled through them because the first three books were so good and I'm hoping Martin can turn things around, but at this point I'm not too optimistic about that. He's got a serious case of Robert Jordan-ism creeping into the writing and he's getting lost in minor details instead of telling a big story.

Book 4 was pretty slow, but I still finished it quickly. Book 5 was much better - the pace really picks up and follows more interesting characters.

I was thinking exactly this when I looked back at the book. Following too many characters, so the story starts to stall when he covers to many diverging paths.

Is the tv series game of thrones bases on the book? Currently reading book 1 right now.

Yes, and season 1 stays very true to book 1. It covers things in a lot less detail, but all the major plot points stay intact. I've heard that's not going to be the case for next season.

semi non-specific spoiler:
One of the writers/producers has let it spill that one of the big plot points of book three will appear in season two of the series to improve the dramatic impact of the season.

Yeah, I agree with pretty much all of this. The last two books have been so disappointing - I wish Martin knew how maintain/complete a story arc. 🙁

After watching the series, I dived in to the books and burned through the first 3 quickly. On the 4th, however, I got maybe 1/4 of the way through and just stopped. Every once in awhile I'll read something like this and it'll remind me I need to go back and finish, but damned if I just don't feel like it.

Glad to know its not just me.

i'm really afraid he's not going to finish the story.. 4th book is slow unfortunately due to the way he wrote it, 5 starts slow but picks up fairly quickly

Book 5 is way better than book 4, but that's because book 4 was so terrible. Such an incredible letdown after book 3. By book 5, things are so far off the rails it really doesn't matter any more. I'll be reading the remaining books (if he ever writes them), but I have zero expectations.

book three was best, for sure, but i did like book 4 too - i enjoy the side stories and development of minor characters.

I don't mind development of minor characters, but a whole book dedicated to it? A complete 180 from the previous 3 books? A terrible decision.
