Last Saturday my wife, son, and I flew down to texas because her father and step-mother wanted to give us a car that they were having a hard time selling. Once there, I called my mother to see when she would want to spend time with her grandson. She answered the phone crying, and I knew right away that my grandfather must of died. He had passed away just 6 hours prior to our arrival.
Over the 4 day trip, in between the trips to the funeral home and cemetery, much of our time was spent watching our son interact with his grandparents and vice versa. Our parents seemed to get so much joy out of just watching their grandson do the littlest little thing, such as picking up a dandelion flower. The simple joy of watching your childrens' children must never fade because even though that I am now 35, and my grandmother is grieving the passing of her husband, I caught my grandmother smiling at me. When I asked what she was smiling at, she said she just liked watching me eat.
While saddenned that my grandfather is gone, I am grateful that we were there and able to, provide my grandmother and mother respite from their grief just by being there with them.
