a simple heatsink question, i need some help

walla

Well I guess the mobo didn't come with heatsink retention clips like it said it would...

My question: are they all the same? Could I grab the retention clips from my old P90 computer heatsink and put them on the P1.7ghz? Is this something that any computer store would have extras of, might sell them? Am I going to have to call Asus and complain?

Any advice is much appreciated.

ok its now obvious to me that they are not all the same 🙂

but how the heck am i supposed to find these clips without going out to replace or buy another montherboard?

walla, motherboards don't usually come w/ heatsink retention clips. Rather, the heatsink/fan unit comes w/ the clip, and it's somewhat specific to the design of the heatsink, not the motherboard.

And, to throw another twist into this, P4 and Athlon boards can also mount the HSF via four holes drilled through the board, on the two sides of the cpu socket.

i think i may have figure out what was wrong...

the manual for the P4T motherboard must be incorrect. I think the 'base heatsink supports' actually are the heatsink retention clips. In the manual, its shows the base supports completely separate from the clips themselves, though the manual makes no mention of the metal clips on the base heatsink support.

this had half to do with Asus printing out of date/incorrect material, and half to do with my not knowing what to do. 🙂

If any P4T owner could confirm this, i'd appreciate it greatly.
