id (n)

In Freudian theory, the division of the psyche that is totally unconscious and serves as the source of instinctual impulses and demands for immediate satisfaction of primitive needs.

Honestly if everyone would just stop and think for a minute or two what that means and why it was chosen as the company name, they'd understand the entire mentality and focus behind all of id software's decisions, and maybe not be so inclined to moan so much.

Now class, thank Mr. dictionary.com for ending all DooM debates and letting us get back to the video forum!

Very good point parkbench. Plus, it's a great scapegoat for their games if/when they turn out to be bereft of complexity, thought and depth. ;)

Alas, I still think many people will be scratching their heads after such a clear definition.

---------------------------

On a tangent, Valve is defined as any of various devices that regulate the flow of gases, liquids, or loose materials through piping or through apertures by opening, closing, or obstructing ports or passageways.

So you see, Valve's focus is to make games so good that you lose control of your bowels and soil your pants.... Wait, ignore that definition ;) :p .

It was a cool name until I found out what it meant. Now it sounds so geeky.

if you know their history, then you know id chose that name for a reason; Carmack and most of the employees' game design philosophy is simple, that of the Pac-man, Galaga, Frogger, etc. Simple, primitive thrills and such. Example being that they tore out the ability to drag Wolfenstein 3d bodies around and searching their pockets to keep the game an arcadeish thrill.

In the case of Valve, I didn't say everybody puts thought into their company name. Hoobastank came up with their band name AFTER they got a hit song on their hands (I don't have an opinion on them either way).

meh, too many irrelevant Doom posts. Guess nobody gets it... or maybe everybody's id is driving them to argue instead of get it. So I guess you can go ahead and post 1000 topics in here saying what you hate about Doom since there aren't enough threads about the game anyway! :p
