I just bought a new camera that also shoots 720p video. However, it stores the video in .mov format. I had to install VLC Media Player just to view it. Can someone recommend a simple codec pack for playback .mov files in WinXP-32? That way, all the other media browsers/players on computer can playback the .mov files too. (WMP, Picasa, ZoomBrowser, etc.)

I finally had some time last night to check out QT Lite. Read some where on the web site that K-Lite codec pack will allow MOV playback with WMP (plus the standard version has mpeg2 codec for DVD playback). I downloaded and installed K-Lite. However, it was not install-and-play for me. Neither WMP nor Media Player Classic (came with K-Lite) will play my MOV files. Missing codec was the error message. I got really confused with the plethora configuration options available. Is there a simple tutorial on how to configure K-Lite codec to work with WMP?

K-Lite codec pack 5.9.0, Standard Edition from here: http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm

Update:
I am half way to where I want to be. It turns out I have to install QT-Lite to get the audio codec needed by MPC. With both QT-Lite and K-Lite codec pack, I can play mov files with MPC and Picasa. Still can't play it with WMP and ZoomBrowser EX (Canon camera software). I am sure it is just a setting thing.

huh, it says here http://www.codecguide.com/about_qt.htm, which you probably already saw, that it should work for media player classic and zoomplayer by installing either the quick time alternative or the qt lite. you only need the other codec pack to play them in windows media player.

Did you keep the default options on the codec pack install?

I have a slightly older version, but i can play mov files ok with mpc. I don't usualy use wmp much, though if i remember when i get home i can try it.

And i didn't realize some canon camera's output video in damn mov format. :( glad mine doesn't. It puts it in an avi container but i don't remember what format.

I find the whole codec thing is really confusing. Yes, I kept all the default options when installing. Base on the download site description, WMP should play mov files after I installed the codec pack, but it doesn't. I prefer not to have too many media players installed on my machine, but I can live with using MPC along side WMP.

I have been a Canon user until just now. I bought a Panasonic camera for its video feature. Since I already have ZoomBrowser EX installed, I would like to keep on using it. It imports the photo files from the Panasonic camera just fine. However, it does not recognize mov files and won't import them.

QT Lite works pretty well... you can even use it with iTunes if you don't want the real Quicktime installed, although to do that, you need to download another application to trick iTunes :p.

I have used QTA/L for many years in XP but exclusively with MPC/MPC-HC. It's not so much the decoders (as they are just standard AVC and AAC) but the media handlers for MOV. So another option is to convert the container to MP4. Happily, the lack of MOV capability in XP was rectified with W7 so QTL is not necessary. In any case, it is preferable to set to the format to DirectShow and use a DXVA capable decoder (MPC-HC internal, Microsoft, CyberLink, and so on).

You can use iDealshare VideoGo to convert MOV to Windows Media Player more supported WMV, AVI, ASF for playing MOV on all versions of Windows Media Player.
