say you go to the store and you buy some stuff. then you get home and you realise they forgot to ring in one item. the item is like $8.

do you go back and pay?

It depends. If I live 15 min away from the store and it's a $1.50 item, they are going to take the hit for it unless they want to cover gas and hassel of driving back.

No.

For it to be an amount big enough for me to feel bad about, they probably had enough security from preventing me from walking out with it.

So, the answer is still no.

No. Actually, it depends on how expensive it was, but I've only ever noticed not being charged on items that are <$5.

That is a big negative! It's not like I intentionally did it the burden shouldn't be on me to go back to the store. I've been honest plenty of times and saved stores money but I am not making a special trip out of it.

I had something like that happen once. The cashier was throwing my food around and when I got to the car realized that I wasn't charged for half of my produce (due to his rush). When I got home I called the store manager and said I'd like to report an employee that wasn't acting correctly. They stopped me and said "Let me guess, it was Mr. #%$#@. He has been acting up lately." Yes the name was correct (it was listed on the receipt). I said what happened, and as a thank you for being honest they wrote up a $10 check for me to pick up the next time I was in the store.

You can try it yourself. Being honest may earn you money. Of course if they don't care, don't tell them your name and don't pay the $8.

Note: name hidden since it was years ago and I don't remember anymore.
