I'm not black, but my hair is really course and curly, kinda sorta like black guys' hair. I have problems with shaving. I use disposable razors, and to get a clean shave I have to do a lot of work. i.e. my facial and neck hair grows in all directions and lies down on my skin, often becoming ingrown. The end result is that when I'm done shaving, I'm so bloody it looks like I've bitten a pig to death.

Have any of you had any luck with electric razors? My dad's hair is like mine, and he never had any luck with them. Any recommendations?

Don't use an electric. That'll only make things worse. Use a double edged safety razor and mug soap. The whole problem with cartridge razors (especially cheap shitty disposables) and electrics is the whole "lift-and-cut" idea, especially in your case.

This will give you a very good run down of the idea.
DE razors are also the best choice for African-American men, many of whom suffer from ?shave bumps?, which occur when their tougher whiskers are cut too aggressively by modern mutli-blade razors, causing them to grow back underneath the skin and turn into ingrown hairs. Switching to a DE and using a shaving brush to exfoliate the skin and prep the whiskers is good for men of all races, but African-American men in particular find that shaving with a safety razor clears up their skin and makes shaving a pleasure again.

Prep better. Take a hot shower, make sure you keep your whiskers wet. Try putting conditioner in the beard to soften the whiskers. Keep a hot towel on your face while getting ready to shave. Pay attention to how your hair grows on every part of your face, and take short, quick passes WITH the grain. Don't try to shave all of the hair off at once, slowly eliminate the beard with each pass. When you are done with your first "pass", re-lather, and go across the grain. Stop there. In your case, do not go against the grain. It will still feel smooth, but it wont be babys butt smooth when you rub your hand against the grain.

For nicks, cuts and weepers, use a stypic pencil to close those up quickly so they do not get infected. Always use an aftershave balm or lotion, with no alcohol.

Thanks for allowing me to read your thread... :p

Hot shower first, followed by not drying face, followed by soaking razor in hot running water while foaming up my face. Runs through it like butter. I only shave about once a week though, waiting for the hair to get long and soft enough to just mow through. I use the same razor blade for about 2 months. I'm a white boy of course.

I use an electric razor but what sucks is that I have to wait a while (like a week or more) to shave so it gets everything off and not bloody. I shaved this morning after a week and I was looking scruffy but I too have some PFB going on (curly facial hair ingrown). My dad uses something that removes the hair from the root without cutting (some chemical I forgot, he's completely black; I'm only half) and a spatula to remove the excess. It sucks bad shaving, I just might have laser removal one of these days to avoid it completely...I hate shaving curly hair.

Why don't you use a buzzer like a hair salon uses? Get it extremely close with the buzzer, then use a rotary electric shaver.

Shave with the grain, wet face, reapply shaving cream, then shave. Don't just shave one direction then immediately in another direction.

I switched because I have seborrhea. Shaving really irritates my skin, so I only shave once or twice a week. By then my facial hair would get long enough to make shaving with a cartridge a horrible PITA by snagging. I tried electric a few times, always to horrible consequence.

The DE razors allow for a clean slice through my hairs without any snagging. They also taught me to shave a bit slower and more purposefully. Anyone who's tried ripping through shaving with a DE like it were a cartridge has learned that the hard way.

Yup. In addition to being much cheaper, they hold their edges a lot longer.

I don't even bother - I just throw em away after two uses.

http://www.badgerandblade.com

They sell a variety pack for around 80 bucks, that gets you blades, soaps, pre-shave oils, aftershaves, creams, etc. Pretty good deal.
