Since household dust is made up mostly of discarded human skin particles.

Would the dust in someone's house that has darker skin be darker dust?

Melanin is what causes skin pigmentation, and it resides under the first few layers of dermis. So I don't think the skin cells themselves actually have any pigment. They're translucent.

Uhm, maybe? Good question. Would you really be able to tell though since dust just kinda changes to a grey color?

I'd like a link to proof that most household dust is made up of skin particles. Perhaps, if you live in a home that is hermetically controlled with no outside air getting in except through HEPA filters, you might make that statement. It still doesn't hold true, though, if you have dogs or cats shedding and bringing in outside detriment.

I believe that your original premise is unsupported and falacious.

House dust is brown. That's because all the shed skin cells get eaten my dust mites which poop it. Poop is brown.

Actually mines more of a cornflower.

I live in So. Cal. My house has no AC and, in the 20 years I have owned the house, I have only lit the pilot light on the furnace during 3 winters. Our windows are open pretty much from sunup to sundown in the winter and are open 24/7 in the summer. The amount of dust that enters my home every day is unbelieveable. It can't possibly be 90% skin particles as I and my family would be walking skeletons by now.

I probably choose to live differently than most, i.e. windows closed with either AC or heat turned on, but your premise is still unsupported and fal(l)acious. You did not include a demographic.

Edit: Just f...ing with you, Brutuskend.

I'll give you this much ;)

House dust is a mixture of many substances. Its content varies from home to home, depending on the type of furniture, building materials, presence of pets, moisture and other factors. A speck of dust may contain fabric fibers, human skin particles, animal dander, microscopic creatures called mites, bacteria, parts of cockroaches, mold spores, food particles and other debris. Of these, animal dander, house dust mites, and cockroaches are the most common culprits. A person may be allergic to one or more of these substances, and, if exposed to the dust, will have an allergic reaction.

This is true to a point... actually, the pigment resides under the skin... BUT, the skin always changes layers, that is, the lower layers will eventually get to the top, in sun, this will happen faster... and it means that if enough sun is provided dark skin is more pigmented... (yes, dark skin does get tanned)...

So yes, the pigmentation will cause the skin layers to darken...

Otherwise, what use would black people have for melanin (except the obvious)...

You do realize that:
Humans shed about 600,000 particles of skin every hour - about 1.5 pounds a year. By 70 years of age, an average person will have lost 105 pounds of skin.
Take a 600,000 skin cells off you and each family member, and run around the house sprinkling it liberally, see how far it goes. And if you think that's scary, did you know what eats all that dead skin?

I thought this was common knowledge.
OK, I don't think I saw this, but did you know that your skin replaces itself every 30 days or so! That's right. You shed that much skin. Keep in mind that your biggest organ is .... SKIN!!!!

i believe that your starting a flamewar that you don't want to start...

a very good question... but i think x-man is right, the pigment of the skin is down a few layers.
