A sad dystopia

Went to the grocery store today. We have a robot called Marty that roams the floors to alert workers to spills, but mostly just gets in the way. Some stuff was spilled on the floor & so the robot hogged up the entire aisle walkway & a worker kid had to come over & clean it up. There was a bit of a traffic jam, so we all waited for the cleanup to happen, i.e a human under the command of a robot. A sad dystopia for sure...at least the robot has googly eyes. Pic from google:

Is that different from an office worker? The computer says "jump", and the worker jumps.

We have that useless thing in my local Stop & Shop too.

The future ain't what she used to be.

I almost punched it the other day...I walked out of an aisle just as it was coming around & put my fists up lol.

True, though it takes a lot of maintenance and programming to make said program that tells them to jump. The funny part is it usually costs more than the workers.... :screamcat:

The best part is that they rolled out the $35,000 Marty robots back in 2019 when they cut back on their staffing!

Funny I was at the grocery store the other day and it really did feel like a dystopia. There were robotic voices over the intercom talking about Covid 19 and all the precautions etc. Just that, with all the signs etc, it feels like being in some kind of twilight zone. Lot of places now have professionally printed stickers/signs too. You know were in it for the long run when they are not using duct tape or hand written signs anymore.

On subject of robots, Amazon drivers now get fired by AI. The AI tracks their every move in their vehicle and if they lose too many "points" they are fired on the spot. They don't even have an actual human firing them or overlooking the data, the AI does it.

I didn't know stores actually had these. I thought the one on 'Superstore' was a joke; I didn't realize it was based on a real thing.
