friend sent me this today, it's very interesting.

Go play the Stalker Demo when it comes out. Programmers went through Chernobyl and took pics and used those to make textures, and stuff. Supposed to be real accurate and stuff.

Creepy.

I love this though-

"not just a regular marauders, they don't steal stuff for themselves. There were cases of radiactive tv sets and other stuff being sold on city second hand markets and then police shot 7 or 8 of them and it helped"

Wow, it actually brings this into perspective for me. I also knew what happened at Chernobyl, why it happened, etc... but I never really knew how people left their lives.

they call it a city where time stands still. May be it is because clocks in this town don't show real time, they are showing radiation level. In any way, 81,6 microroengen per hour isn't bad for this place. Few years ago level has been two times more of that and in a May of 1986 it was hundreds of times more then that

I thought the big scare was that this stuff lasted an eternity, or is that just in scared people years? ;)

Saw it yesterday from slashdot. Pretty creepy when you think about it. And the scary thing is, the Ukranian government is still running a couple of it's reactors.

Half life = eternity
There will be elevated radiation levels for thousand of years. The biggest drops come in the first hundred years or so.

How stuff works.

Yes, she mentioned the silence in the city getting to people.

During the initial clean-up they had to play music over loudspeaks throughout the city so the workers wouldn't go insane from the silence.

I've been thinking of buying a house there. I figure the property value should be low enough I could take my current savings, buy a fabulous house there for pennies on the hundreds and have enough left to retire. And think, a whole CITY all to myself. No traffic jams. No filled up bars. No sittin in back at the movie theater. AND i could go play around at the cool nuclear power plant that wouldnt have any gaurds!! :D

I think she meant the fire at the plant itself. when she was talking about the shining. Then again, I think there were reports that the core was exposed to the atmosphere as well, so it could be that.

Actually the KGB repo'd the water they were using at th plant, causing it to overheat......
Cause water is scarce in Mother Russia. And they shouldnt have been using so much of it for a stupid little plant like that.
