A really dumb cooling question

Hi All,

I'm stuck in that "4 case fans" is the only way to cool your system mode and was thinking
about one large 8" or 10" fan mounted on the side of the case to cool the entire system (not including the cpu fan or the power supply exhaust fan). My Patton 10" fan (from Home Depot)that I use to move air in my office is quieter and moves more air than my 4 case fans. Does anyone make a fan that could be mounted on the outside of case(side) that would work. Or do I have too much time on my hands and should move on to other projects?
Please don't flame me for asking the question.
Looking forward to your responses...

10" and 12" pancake fans can be obtained through Summit or other auto "speed" shops. They are used to replace the fan that used to be bolted to the water pump on engines, or to help with oil coolers or trans coolers. They are 12V and should work just fine, most have a shroud to keep you fingers from being chopped off too. Be aware though, these things push some SERIOUS CFM and may be a tad bit loud.

Mwnelson: Give some thought as well to what sort of filter you're going to use. A 10" to 12" intake fan will pull all sorts of crap into your case.

also, you might think that fan is quiet now but once you have it moving a ton of CFM's into your case, the turbulance will cause alot of noise

My neighbor is a real overclocking freak and he took one of those Galaxy floor fans (can get them at Walmart or any store like that) and attached it to the side of his case. It makes a hell of alot of racket, and looks really cool. Only problem is if you have cats or small children, it'd hurt pretty dang bad if they stuck their hands or anything in there (not metal blades but a thick plastic) I dont know how well it cools, but I do know he has his Duron 600 running at almost 1Ghz (if not on) It also has 3 speed settings to make it quieter but cool less, med is average speed, more noise, and high is like a jet taking off but puts out alot of air

Dan is correct, pets and small children are especially at risk. Really though, you will need some sort of filter to keep all the nasties outta the case :)
