Multiple cameras seems more useful and practical.

or realtime 3d translation/representation onto computer. Current 3D displays don't seem like they would be good for this.

no, i think those remote surgeon tools were not 3d. i'm sure you've seen videos of magnification screens for keyhole surgery used by surgeons, its 2d, and they do all sorts of complicated stitching and stuff.
