Seems I've tried everything, and read everything, (not that I understand it all, but I'm trying). I did not think it could be difficult. What, am I missing? Perhaps one of you good people could walk me though this. I figure once I get the router working I can deal with the rest of the network.
Asus A8N-SLi deluxe
onboard dual ethernet, both light up, so I guess they're working.
Cox cable modem to computer, via ethernet cable, (working now).
Netgear wireless router, WGR614 v2 802.11g

It should be Modem to WAN port of Router.

Wired computers should connect with network cable from the network card to a regular LAN port on the Router.

Wireless capable computers should configure wirelessly with the Wireless part of the Router.

Thanks Jack, your first link is exactly how I had it set up. Have used the Netgear setup, the windows setup, tried various settings, still can't get the router to work with the computer it's sitting next to. I'll deal with the other wireless computers in this household later. right now, it's just; modem> router> main computer, how hard can this be?, and I can't even do that. Looking at the ezlan site now, I'm going to lick this, and I'll be a better man for it, but right now, I'm just a noob. Should have just taken up golf like most men my age, put the small white ball into that hole over there, how hard can THAT be?

I'm assuming that when you plug in your computer directly to the modem, it works. If not, then the problem is with the modem/ISP rather than your connection to your router.

When you have Modem>Router>Computer, does it say "Connected"? If yes, then can you just not access the internet at this point ?

Hi Tiz; modem, r45 to computer = internet access
modem, r45 to router, r45 to computer = nothing
I'm going to try the router again and see just what it says, "Connected"
 
Tried the router again, all lights indicate good, opened My network places, shows 3 connections, all connected, but only 1 shows packets sent, not received. all 3 have what looks to be a *padlock* in the picture. I will study the links you have given me, and post tomorrow, it is past my bedtime. Thank you gentlemen.

Make sure you power on the modem first and then plug in the power into the router so the router gets the info from the modem. There also should be a easy-install guide or CD with your router no?

Also use this guide. It is direct from NetGear for your router. You need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the file (www.adobe.com) ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/wgr614_v2_install_guide.pdf


To summarize after you have your router hooked up properly, you can let it auto detect your internet settings.
 
Houston, I *think* we have solved the problem. Updated the chipset drivers, seems there were problems with the, pci bridge, and the ethernet drivers. I am told that the nvidia ethernet is better than than the marvell yukon, ???? both on board. About to attempt to install the router on the nvidia,(am using it now), wish me luck. Ya know, I should have just taken up fishing like most men my age, put bait on hook, drop line in water, fish jump on, how hard can THAT be?
