a real net working newbie here HELP!!

Ok I need to get the software working. I have a home pc to a laptop pc all cables are hooked up threw a hub. But is that peer to peer? I just want to share files and maybe the interbet. But just files for now. Can I please have some info on this I have beed reading on the net but I am still confured.
