Pardon my ignorance, but...
I just got an elcheapo supplementary telephoto 2x lens for my Canon a70.
It is my understanding then that with this lens, I should have 6x optical zoom (3x x 2x = 6x)?
Am I right?

So, should I be able to "see" more zoom power in my camera?

Here's what I'm thinkin.

Do this: w/out adapter -> Zoom out and take picture, noting on the LCD what you're framing before you shoot. Then, w/adapter -> do the same thing. Compare the view and image captured using both methods and deduct from that test what variance if any to expect.

However: In the above test I said to use the "LCD" for framing your shot. Your LCD is showing you a Through The Lens (TTL) image which will represent the effect your adapter provides. Viewing through the A70's eyepiece won't show the difference because it's not viewing TTL. The eyepiece views through it's own lens, thus not representing the variance an addon adapter creates. Just look through the LCD when using the adapter and you'll be fine.

Now, the above is just a guess. Just run a couple self tests and see what the variance if any is. If anyone else knows this to actually work different than I've described, please jump in!

Yes, you are right about the telephoto being a multiple of whatever the camera has. A lot of people use the TCON-17 lene, whice is only 1.7x, but when a camera has a 6x zoom, that equals over 10x!

Be careful about buying el cheapo lenses... Go to DPReview.com's Forums and ask people there. There are so many users, there are a few who have tried every lense. You can see how good they are, just by how much they cost. The TCON-17 is like $100 and the el cheapo is about $50.

Yep, I do believe thats how it works.

I have an A60, but haven't bought any add-on lenses yet.

I'm glad to see a thread on this. I was thinking about getting an extra telephoto lens for my A70, but hadn't seen much on it.

if the A70 accepts lenses like the A40, it will work without a hitch.

i bought a telephoto lens, wide angle lens and a macro lens from my A40.

We need more info, what brand did you get, was it worth the price, and is the zoom power in your camera has increased?

Thank you so much for this thread! This is the perfect give for my GF!

So are the $80 2x zoom and wideangle combos not worth the money?

Where can I look at nicer lenses for it? I would love to spend ~$100 for a really nice zoom lens that did more than 2x.

Always keep in mind that ANY supplimental lens degrades image quality.

Whether it's enough to be noticable is always open to debate, but it happens to some degree in EVERY case.

what does the lens adaptor do?

Do some lens' that are intended for use with the camera not need an adapter? but the adapter makes it so you can use a larger variety of lens' with the a70?

So, can one assume that a higher priced supplemental lens would nots degrade the quality as much as a cheaper one?

hell if i remember the brand. tossed the boxes out when i got them.

yes the zoom power is increased. actually number it increased, haven't a clue. I picked up a 2x telephoto. the A40 is 3x telephoto. I really don't think i got 2x closer with the lens.

so if the A70 was 3X optical zoom built in... why would they sell a 2x telephoto lens that didn't increase the current 3x zoom?

it increased. but i don't think the 2x helped that much.
