I was trying to buy two airplane tickets last night.
The second ticket was somewhat dependent on the first ticket, so i went to purchase the first ticket at Company A's horrible website.
Company A's horrible website kept refusing to take my card (probably because the form where you fill out your personal information had several fields that should be text boxes as pull-down menus - which did not contain choices appropriate to my location. e.g. the city field for billing info was a pull-down menu that did not contain my city.)
Well after three attempts of trying to put my personal info in and the transaction being rejected, I decided to call the company directly and purchase the ticket over the phone. Well they tried running it over the phone and it still wasn't going through. They also told me that their incredible online system puts a hold on my card for the amount of the ticket each time I attempt to buy EVEN IF MY PERSONAL INFO IS NOT CORRECT, WTF. Yet I still don't have a ticket.
Of course, my bank's service center for dealing with this stuff is closed at night at the time I was trying to make these purchases.
Knowing that both tickets are going up in price the next day (today), I decided to minimize my losses and head over to Company B's website and at least buy the second ticket. Company B actually has a great website and everything is going fine until... MY CARD GETS REJECTED AGAIN. Now it finally hits me, the three "holds" from the first crappy website have pushed my card over the daily spending limit.
Tomorrow is here. The price for Company A's ticket has gone up $150, the price for Company B's ticket has gone up $150. I'm down $300 so far and if I try to complain here's what will happen:
Company A: It's not our fault you used our website instead of making the purchase over the phone. It's not our fault you tried three times on the website. It's not our fault your card has a daily spending limit.
Card Company: It's not our fault the website you used was crappy.
Company B: It's not our fault you hit your spending limit before you even got to our website.
So maybe I should try to take some personal responsibility instead of trying to blame the big bad corporations. Since the problem all resulted from Company A, I try to make this my fault but it's difficult.
I used their website instead of the phone because I don't think I've not purchased a ticket on the web for the past 8 years. Never had a problem.
I tried to make the purchase three times because I've had a transaction rejected many times before, usually because I made a stupid error on my billing info - and I NEVER remember one time where a failed charge attempt still resulted in a hold on my account.
As for the spending limit: O.K. maybe that is somehow my fault. I've never hit the limit before.
By the way I called the bank this morning and they confirmed my version of events happened.
TL;DR:
1. Try to buy tickets from horrible company website A: they "charge" my card three times without ever issuing a ticket.
2. Try to buy "connecting" flight ticket from company B: card refused because I've now hit my daily spending limit because of company A website.
3. Prices of the two tickets I need have now gone up a combined $300.
4. Really want to blame someone.
