A Random Thought: Mel Gibson is truly talented.

He wasn't just a pretty face afterall. His awesome diverse acting ability is hardly outmatched. (Braveheart, Leathal Weapon, What Women Want, etc)

He also has some serious skills in film directing. (Braveheart & The Passion of Christ)

He rocks. Really. It's very hard to think of someone as talented as him in Hollywood.

I agree with you about his talent.

I think Tom Hanks is also very talented.

EDIT: Clint Eastwood is great too, but I don't think he has a wide an acting range as Tom Hanks or Mel Gibson. Maybe I've just typecasted him for his roles in Dirty Harry, Unforgiven, and other movies like that.

EDIT2: Damn you grammer!

Cut and paste for the lazy ones.

Director - filmography
(2000s) (1990s) (1980s)

"Band of Brothers" (2001) (mini) TV Series (part 5 "Crossroads")

"From the Earth to the Moon" (1998) (mini) TV Series (part one)
That Thing You Do! (1996)
Vault of Horror I (1994) (TV) (segment "None but the lonely heart")
"Fallen Angels" (1993) TV Series (episode "I'll Be Waiting")
"League of Their Own, A" (1993) TV Series (episode "The Monkey's Curse")

"Tales from the Crypt" (1989) TV Series (episode "None but the Lonely Heart")
... aka "HBO's Tales from the Crypt" (1989)

Not quite as big as Mel Gibson but still a director all his own. He also composed the songs for That Thing You Do?

Gibson's good but his talent isn't legendary. There are plenty of actors today that are much better and tons of directors that dwarf his skills.

I agree, but I cannot think of any that are as talented in both.

Actually, Adam Schlesinger from Fountains of Wayne wrote all the songs from That Thing You Do.

Robert Duvall
Clint Eastwood
Robert Redford
Kevin Costner - I know you are thinking of his latest bombs, but don't forget he won 2 Academy Award Best Picture, and Best Director

I like Robert Duvall a lot too. Has he directed much? I honestly don't know.

I've always thought Gene Hackman was one of the finest and most unheralded actors in Hollywood. He's so good in pretty much any role that you cast him in that it's easy to take him for granted. Don't know if he's directed anything, but he's a fantastic actor.

Too bad he's also a moron who swallows that scientology crap.

I think you're thinking of someone else (Cruise, Kidman, Travolta, etc.). Gibson is & always has been Catholic.
