I just bought a Quad core 2.66 Ghz CPU.

Some games require Dual core 3 Ghz CPU's to run - Will my quad core be able to run them or will i have to OC?

they will run. depending on other hardware in the machine though we can't say they'll run great. but having a 3ghz CPU and a weak GPU won't help that either. make sure your system is balanced, and generally you can OC to 3 GHz without significant thermal implications.

Could you be specific on the game or the exact dual core it is talking about? I've never seen anything above a 2.4Ghz C2D recommended much less required, most of the time if I see anything near 3.0Ghz it's a P4/PD. The C2D/C2Q are much faster than those old processors despite a lower clock speed.

The game is not going to check your speed and say "sorry, i'm not even going to try to run." The 3GHz figure was probably meant for a pentium d or athlon x2. It really doesn't apply to you, but if you have the means to do a little overclocking, then go for it.

Thanks man, that was EXACTLY what i wanted to hear.
As for overclocking, i will definitely be attempting that - I just gotta learn how to do it properly first. Ive never even tried before.

Game "requirements" for ram/CPU etc are rarley actually requirements, they're recommendations, to help a novice figure out if they have a fast enough CPU. Which you do. Any game recommending 3gHz+ would be for a much older model CPU than your quad, such as a pentium 4 or pentium D

Any quad @ 2.6ghz is going to play every game decently at the very least. You have nothing to worry about.
