To be brief, I wanted to see if Millenium would suit my needs, or otherwise get a suggestion for a better one.

Sometime over the summer I picked up this el-cheapo compaq with cel667 and i810 on it for $10ish. At the time, all I needed was a print server/internet box/mp3 jukebox for our living room, and it wokred quite well for that (duh). Now that I started taking this C++ course that pretty much requires coding on linux on some projects, I thought it would be a good reason to try linux again. Took me like a whole day to install Ubuntu and set everything up; everything seems ok, with the exception of divx/xvid playback being jerky. I realize this is a quite outdated and underpowered POS, but it was doing much better (at least barely acceptable IRC) on windows/GOM compared to Ubuntu/VLC i am running on it now. Thats with ffmpeg settings set quite low to making things look craptastic too. I am guessing the drivers for i810 on Ubuntu is less than ideal, or worse than on windows. Another thing is refresh rate limitation, which forces me to choose my poison between 800x600@85hz or 1024x768@75hz, what a PITA.

Since I dont think this computer would get that much use for video playback in the first place, I am not looking to spend more than $5 on it. Someone has incidentally offered her Matrox Millenium for about that much. Would that card work better than i810? I know g400 works quite well but the millenium is some 2-3 generations behind.. Feel free to suggest another el-cheapo vga that wouldnt break my piggy bank :)

Start a thread on FS/T looking for a PCI nVIDIA card. The Linux drivers rock, and I'm sure you'll be able to get a GeForce2 for cheap.

I guess I will try that locally so I could save up on shipping.
even the lowly m64's lack of bandwidth would only matter in 3d right?

Yes, but I'm sure someone will offer one up for free plus shipping of $5 or so.
