A question to those who use my pichosting service (or anybody really)

I'm contemplating allowing people to pay me to put their advertisement on the main page of the pics.paulsonator.com site...

Now, the reason I ask is I really want to get more bandwidth for the site and all it's services. I need some source of pretty solid revenue to do what I want to do, and I don't know if I want to have any more of it come out of my pocket directly...

Would any of you take objection to it? I'm not talking about ads that would take up a page, just a simple 468 x 60 ad at the top of the page and a small one on the side...

I'd like to ask before doing, because I know the site wouldn't have any visitors or any users in the first place if it wasn't for most of you..

so with that, I leave it open for opinions on the matter.

I wouldn't be charging and don't ever plan on charging for the service, all I want to do is make it so I'm not making any but I'm not losing any either.

would it come up when you link to a pic? i don't use your hosting so i'm not sure of the format. i dunno if anyone would object to one on the main page (or two or whatever), i mean you gotta support the site somehow. :) it's finding ppl to pay you that's a bitch these days.

No, no images would show up when linking from another site or so forth like geocities or angelfire...

All I'm talking about is one or 2 ads on the main page of the pics site, possibly the main site and nowhere else...

Go for it. It's your website and it is costing you money. If you can break even or make a few bucks you deserve it. It isn't costing anyone to post their content to your site so they should have no objections.

I'm fine with it as long as it doesn't affect pic linking.

Really have to thank you again for your pic hosting.

Sounds like a good idea to me, there is no reason for you to take a total loss for your service.

Go ahead and do it if that's what you want. But be prepared to lose people from the forums. I, for one, considered using an Anandtech member's pic hosting because of how interpersonal it was and limited without advertisement or external influences. But if you and others went ahead with something of this nature, it defeats the whole purpose and convinces me to stick with the ad supported businesses offering pic hosting already. That's just me though. It may not reflect the view of most members here.

So you want him pay out of his own pockets for the bandwidth? All he's doing is putting a banner ad in the main page. Last time I checked, the main page does not interfere with pic hosting.

Paulson, even if you put ads on the link them selves, I'd still use it. I personally don?t care about ads anymore. It?s a part of the net now (unless its a pop up ad).

I can gaurantee you are the only person on the forums that feels that way. Obviously you have no idea at the cost that goes behind the services that Paulson has supplied us with. Put banners on everything Paulson, I don't give a crap. Also, Paulson, you have a PM because I would like to talk to you about something.

I dont like the flashing, loud, obtrusive ads. Anything else I can ignore. And I can put up with the ones I dont like long enough to look at a picture.

Well, they wouldn't be an ad company or anything stupid like that. It'd just be one that somebody would either contact me via an email or some other source, I'd allow them to view their views and clickthroughs of the ad and so forth...

It wouldn't be the up in your face type ad. I'd have to approve of it and only I could use it. It wouldn't be on the forums and it wouldn't be anywhere other than the pichosting site, since that's what uses up a good majority of bandwidth.

I'd like to make it so no one has to ever pay, and I feel that this would be a good way for my site to get more bandwidth, and for all of you to overall have a better experience...

I'd say go for it. If it'll get you more bandwidth I don't see how people could complain.

well I think people are really against advertising, and only want to block it anyways...

Who knows. All I know is I need a way to generate income to keep the server going at reasonable speeds.. the server itself is not the problem, it's a damn fine machine, it's just the connection is lacking severely.
