If you happen to be at the mall during the shooting and saw the gunman shoot his first vicitim and you also had a concealed hand weapon, would you shoot and kill him to safe the other people.

I think I would, but what I'm scared of is people thinking that I'm the shooter. I'd probably shoot him once or twice, slide my gun away, and put my arms up.

I dunno, but i was at that mall about 3 weeks ago during a ski trip out there. Pretty crazy to picture it happening there. It was so quiet and relatively lame when i was there...

This is a trick and pointless question. The local malls here prohibit firearms, therefore no one would ever go on a shooting rampage at the mall.

Ok, being serious now. Because the local mall does not allow lawful consealed carry I don't shop there. I take my hard earned money to firearm "friendly" businesses.
Let the mall ninjas with ther pepper spray and whistles take care of the gunman.

No. I'm not in a position to know what is going on or why, especially after only one kill. I'd have it drawn and use it to protect myself and the people I care about. But for all you know he could have been an undercover cop (albeit odd with a big rifle).

Maybe lead people to safety and use it for cover instead.

I'd shoot, get the shooter's firearm, and slide both very very far away while making sure the guy does nothing further. It's a crappy situation any way you look at it, but I'd be willing to take the off chance of going to jail for shooting someone who had the potential of killing several others.

Yeah I would. I was surprised nobody capped that guy, Utah is pretty loose about letting people have/use concealed firearms.

I would like to say I would take appropriate action but I can't say with certainty because I've never been in such a situation.

I'm suprised he didn't get one between the eyes. Seems about 3-4 out of 10 folks have CCW, and about 1/3 of those pack heat nearly everywhere. I'm not sure about the comment about the mall being non CCW friendly, I've never seen posted signs (which is required in UT to have it that way) but I haven't been to Trolly Square since I was dating my wife years ago, and we lived downtown.

I'd frag his ass with a shock combo and then lob a couple of flak his way just to be sure; you never know how much shield he's got.

After shooting both pistols and rifles, I can say that I would rather not be the guy holding the pistol in a pistol vs. rifle shootout. They guy with a rifle can shoot you long before you can get close enough to shoot him with a pistol. If I happened to be within about 25 yards when he started shooting, then I would probably shoot. If I'm too far away, then there is no way I'm going to try to sneak up on him, so I would probably just run for the door.

I believe its actually shotgun vs. pistol, but that doesn't really help your situation much.

OP specifically said after only the first shooting (and I'm assuming you were standing close by). Sure if a kid or pregnant woman were killed it would be wierd (as if it weren't wierd to begin with) and you might do something about that. But until he starts walking away and blasting other people you don't have any idea of what's going on. When that happens then yeah, take some action.

I'd say that the chances of an undercover having to shoot someone in a mall because a sting goes bad are still just as likely as someone randomly walking into a mall and blasting people away, despite current events.

but at that point he should be notifying the people that he is a cop.

Well yeah, certainly. But some people are posting like they'll just blast him away before he even has such a chance. I doubt it would take long for him to identify himself as a cop, but it takes even less time for a bullet to reach his head.

so apparently it *was* someone with a concealed weapon (off duty cop) who shot the guy...

Ya, it was an off duty cop.

What I heard was that he held off the shooter until more support could arrive, and that he wasnt actually the one to kill him.

Funny I dont know concrete facts, because I live about 15 minutes away from where it happened.
