Cover the top
Leave the sides open
If you kill power, make sure to turn it back on 24 hrs. before you want to use again.

I had wondered about this too. I see other people doing it but never knew if it was required.

Eh? My parents never did that and they have had their central A/C's outside unit for as long as I can remember.

We always put a piece of plywood on the top of ours to keep crap out. Couple bricks to hold it down and you are in business.

Down here in TX, I never bother. But then again, if we get 6" of snow all winter long, it's a nasty cold winter!!

Growing up in NY, however, my dad always covered it with a tarp, and secured it with a piece of light rope. Clothesline would be more than adequate. He did it more to keep the snow out of it than any other reason, but I don't know how important that really is.

If you just want to keep leaves and other debris out you could make a simple covering using window screen material.
