A question or 2 about RAM........RDRAM or DDR? plz help me choose.

Hello, Ive got a wedge of cash to blow on my pc and for the last month Ive been scanning the web for info on what to buy. I have a few ideas and I just have a couple of questions to help me decide.

Im going to buy
P4 1.8 - 2.0 gb processor.
minimum 512mb of RDRAM
And ASUS P4TE mobo socket 478.

Questions......

1 On the back of the P4 boxes it says its a 400mhz chip, but all the memory Ive seen is PC800. Does this mean I can get the processor to run a 800mhz?
2 If so what type of processor should I buy , ie... the processors with the "a" on it , 1.8A gb and 2.0A etc....... or just the strandard 1.8 and 2.0 gb?
3 Will rambus lash down the ddr memory in 3dmark2001?
4 And what 3dmark should I expect with my GF3?
5 Do any mobo's support AGP x8 yet? I havent seen or heard anything
6 What is your favourite colour?
7 What is the weather like?
8 Should I still listen to the voices?

Plz answer any u can

thx always

PS have I left anything out?

1. no you can't get it to run at 800 mhz but PC800 is what you should be looking at
2.go with the a for the processor not the regular
3.it shouldn't "lash down" very muhc if at all
4.what kind of GF3??? id say ~8000-9500 not positive though
5. I have seen a mobo or 2 that will support AGP 8x i don't remember which though
6. blue
7. cold
8. yes

1. The 400MHz statement on the box referes to the Front Bus Speed. As you probably know when you use RDRAM the FBS is 100x4 (it's just the way the memory subsystem works) = 400MHz. For some reason (I have no idea what that is) they multiply the FBS by 2 and stick a PC infornt of it, hence the PC800 and PC1066 names. To sum it up you should be looking for PC800 RDRAM, 8 Devices for 128MB modules and 16 Devices for 256MB modules.

2. You should definately buy the ones with the 'A' at the end of the name.

3. P4 systems with RDRAM are faster than those with DDR. Can't understand where 3DMark fits in all this though ...

4. Just surf through madonion's website. You really need to stop caring about 3DMark, it's bad for you.

5. No idea.

6. Pin ... er ... red.

7. Not bad actually.

8. Don't ask me, ask them.

Thx everyone, I shall go with the voices with this 1 and do it 🙂

Im a bit confused by what MrGrim says though;

<< To sum it up you should be looking for PC800 RDRAM, 8 Devices for 128MB modules and 16 Devices for 256MB modules. >>

Me and my "special" friends shall hope to find out if anyone else knows what mobo's support AGP x8?

Thx all

Actually I shouldn't have worded it like that, my bad.

If you are going to buy 128MB RDRAM Modules then make sure their number of devices is 8.
If you are going to buy 256MB RDRAM Modules then make sure their number of devices is 16.

Only if you are overclocking. If not, get the high density (low devices) RDRAM.
