Tell him to search for, and try Virtual Dub.

It's a free program that might let him recompress the file to another format. Depending on how long it is, it'll take up a whole lot of space if he uncompresses it.

Edit: What format is it in?

It may not necessarily be divx. could be XviD or something like that too.
get the nimo codec pack if you've no idea what codec the avi is.

no codec = no decoding = no editing = no fun.

A. Premiere cannot import MPEG-4 movie clips at all (like Divx) it doesnt support them.

Q. Why?

A. There is no industry standard for MPEG-4 like there is for MPEG-1 (M$ very crappy), 2 (DVD), or 3 (MP3) and Adobe Premiere Does not support importing them.

You can import uncompressed AVI, hence the error message.

Hope that helps

With the DivX codecs installed he will be able to export DivX movies from Premiere, however he will not be able to import.

Same as my last post

FYI There are a handfull of MPEG-4 codecs that Premiere will import, I dont remember what they are off the top of my head, but they are specific to capture hardware (I think the DV Gate uses some form of MPEG-4 but cant remember).
