A question for those who aren't spiritual

What do you do when you are preparing for something that is out of your control? Say you are going for a job interview? Or maybe a close relative is going in for a major surgery?

I pray my ass off when I am faced with situations like that. Even when my faith wasn't the greatest, I would pray that things would work out. What do you do if you don't believe in a higher power?

I turn around 3 times quickly and sing "Good Ship Lollipop" in a loud falsetto. So far that's working out as well as the invisible men in the sky work out for other people.

I do jack shit.
Simply hope for the best, knowing that everything is under control of man, and not by some prick who decides who can and cannot receive his benefit during these occasions.
And if it's something regarding something I am doing, I go into it knowing it's all on me, and simply press on knowing whether I fail or succeed, it was all on me, and use it as a learning experience.

If I am going to a job interview I prepare more for the interview. If a close relative is in surgery I get a second opinion, do all the research I can, and hassle the doctors to pay attention to that relative. Sitting there muttering to yourself isn't going to do anything, you need to take action.

Nothing. I just make sure I do everything within my power to make the best of the situation.

do you think praying has any impact on the actual outcome or do you do it to make you feel better?

It accomplishes both.

What happens if I pray for you to not get the job.

What does it accomplish when you don't get the job because you weren't prepared, or when a relative dies during a minor procedure? How did it effect the outcome?

Praying for a specific outcome isn't wise. That would be trying to tell God what to do. I don't think he is up to taking orders from me (or you).

I used to pray as a kid, but once I realized I was only talking/thinking to myself I quit doing it. Now I just give myself a pep talk if I need it, adjust my "package", and have learned to rely on myself in those tough situations.

The idea that I can have any kind of extra-worldly effect on events simply isn't something I'm accustomed to considering. I just do what I do, and what happens happens.

I honestly find it hard to fathom why you would think begging your invisible sky man would help anything. You realise there have been rigorous, empirical studies showing that prayer is completely useless, right? That it really does nothing at all. I'll dig up some links if you want.

I don't pray because it doesn't work. I'm pragmatic and I believe in the facts as we know them.

But he takes requests? What about all the parents that prayed for their kids not to be molested by priests? It didn't do them much good, did it?

Then why pray at all if he's going to decide the outcome by himself anyways.

what happens if 50,000 fans pray for 1 football team to win and 50,000 fans of equal faith and qualifications pray for the opposing team to win?

The game ends in a draw. Duh.

Or if 2,000,000 people all pray to win the lottery on the same night?

I don't have all the answers. I was trying to find out what non-spiritual people do in tough situations.
