I am considering an AMD XP processor for my second computer that is only missing the processor. I think the mobo is an Asus A7V333... anyway, the quesion is which AMD XP processor should I buy, as I do not have the time to wait for the 2600+ to come out. I was thinking something in the lines of overclockability over performance over price, such as the 1600+. I heard theres the agoia line or something like it, and that that should be the best one to get. I am not quite sure, if it is smarter to get the 1600+ or the 2000+ and overclock to 2200+. Are these models basically the same or would I get a higher clockrate from a 2000+ than the 1600+? I have been doing some research and looked at some of the forum responses, but they confuse me more than help at this point... Btw, how would I then be able to OC? Does the pencil trick actually work? Or would I need a special conducting solvent?

I would be really cool if someone could answer one or two of my 1001 questions, as I obviously have no clue?

My greatest and ut most appreciation for your time!

The 1600+ and 2200+ should OC to approx. the same clockspeed, with the 1600+ having a higher FSB speed (thus greater memory speed, thus greater memory bandwidth, thus higher performance). You can overclock XP chips without unlocking them, but you won't be able to adjust the multiplier, though with the 1600+s 10.5 multiplier there typically isn't much need to unlock it. The pencil trick for unlocking the multipliers that worked on TBird chips, won't work on XPs (in fact, there are slightly different methods for unlocking different cores within the XP line). In general, to unlock XP chips you have to fill the gap between one of the bridges and then use a pencil or conductive ink to connect the bridges.

hey thanks for the reply!!! yeah, that makes it a bit clearer!

So youre saying that I can OC the XPs but I wont be able to change the multiplier, what effect does this have on perfomance as a opposed to a CPU that is completely unlocked?

How would I go about unlocking a 1600 or 2000? I have read some THGs, but I am not too sure how it actually works... Im pretty sure there are some wite ups, the question is if it is recommended for the perfomance or not? What do you think?

-THX-

There's not much point in unlocking an XP 1600+, because the multiplier is already so low.

since we already have an expert in here, and the other post about 1600xp is too long.

I have some questions for the expert also. sorry Boethius.

so my 1600xp is running at 1.77 at 1.85 vcore. can't seem to get over the 168 fsb hhurdle.

I have an epox 8kha+. now from every review and specs. this board does NOT have an 1/5 divider. but everything works fine at 166, which would put everything out of specs. is there anyway I can find out the agp and pci clock? and should I unlock the cpu? I really would like to hit 1.8. for cooling I have an alpha 8045 with a 84cfm tornado on 12v/7v mod. oh yea, also running samsung true333 ddr ram.
