I know what a lag spike is, but only because I was a multiplayer game tester before I grew up and got a REAL technology job that pays actual money to it's employees instead of free t-shirts, pizza, and pre-release game copies. Those perks are nice, mind you, but they don't pay the rent.

In the five plus years that I've worked in IT, I've NEVER heard that term used by my customers.

Basic 5th grade level reading comprehension would tell you that when you say "lag spike" when referring to network connections, that you are referring to a sudden increase in latency.

I don't draw that conclusion, and neither do most network folks. sorry. You're trying to apply jargon from one area to another and it ain't gonna work.

What the hell do you admin, the AARP servers? :p

Everyone in the IT department I'm in knows exactly what's going on if we're "experiencing a ****load of lag"

c'mon merc, don't call me an admin dude. Although I have noticed a marked change in the direct marketing to my home.

ahhh, the good old days...where playing quake2 against other people was really fun and I ownded all. mmmmmm, quad hyperblaster.

I'm gonna go upstairs to the office and fire up half-life2 and see if I can still play. I was actually pretty good back in the day. I don't even know what a good online game to play is. There was some utility to find servers (i thinkg is was called gamespy...i don't remember, but lots of green) and then launch the game. Is there anything like that out now or does everybody just use the ingame stuff?

Sorry, I can't remember your actual title. ;)

The in-game browsers are generally pretty good these days. You'll have to sort by actual ping number though, not stoplight code. :D

"Lag spike" is a bullsh!t term used by IM addicted, multi-player game kids. It has no ground in any circles outside of IM and gaming circles.

Though, if you apply the term to IT related things then there isn't many conclusions you can draw from the term, no matter how many of you hardcore oldschool geeks argue against it.
