How did you potty train them?

Give me your best advice and what your experiences are.

Pee is flowing everywhere!

Girls are a breeze compared to this... he thinks it is a dang super soaker water gun! :p

Oh Isla, I could write VOLUMES! My one and only son took forever to potty train. He was the most stubborn little stinker. I went through every self-help book, visits to the pediatrician..you name it. He had three different potties that I let him pick out (supposedly that was supposed to let him feel in control), I tried rewarding him with stickers, we had charts, Cheerios in the toilet for target practice...literally, you name it, I did it.

I'll PM you the gory details if you want them, but the finale was he potty trained himself in two days, only three months before his fourth birthday. Never had one accident after that. Apparently, once I gave up and planned on a life of diapers for him, he figured he'd beaten me and just decided to go on his own.

Yes, please! Ahhh, someone who has been there! :) PM me with what you think is the key, and what to avoid. I'll stay logged on and check back later. The only upside to this is that I may be able to talk my husband into replacing the carpet with Pergo flooring soon... This kid thinks his pee is holy water and blesses the house every chance he gets. Clothes and diapers are no barrier for him... I turn around, he's nekkid and watering the living room.... :p

Set 'em in front of the stool and have him go for it at the same time every day.

If there is success, many loves and hugs, high fives, maybe an activity you do together that he especially enjoys. I tried rewards too, it works for only a very short time. :(

Don't be mean or punish failure.

We had so many problems with the first boy and tried so many different things... this was the only technique that worked. My younger boy just 'got it' as soon as we took the diapers off. I think he was watching what was going on with his older brother...

Still working on the washing the hands thing...

Isla: As the mother of two boys, I can safely tell you, when he is ready he will go. My oldest was potty trained at a year, and my youngest when he was almost three. Until he finally decided to go, we had lots of mopping and washing of the cat to do. Kidding, well at least about the cat part. But this reminds me of something funny. My husband was sleeping on the couch in the living room, and there is a vent right above it. My youngest decided to take a pee down the vent and see what would happen. Well, he found out what happens, when my hubby came flying off the couch with a shriek and threats that scared half the neighbors on our block. I of course, sat there trying to explain to my son how that was not nice to do, but I am not sure if he believed me when I was laughing so hard I was crying. :D

ROTFLMAO! What a rude awakening. :D

Well, mine is only 16 months old and at first I thought he would be potty trained early. He has been ripping his clothes off every chance he gets and want to wear those padded briefs instead of diapers. So I thought, "cool, he's ready!" Not! He makes small gorilla warning noises when I approach him to put his clothes back on, and then he screams like a banshee the whole dang time. Methinks the struggle for control has already begun. :( We bought him a potty chair, and he took it apart and tried to throw it away... so right now I am just trying to plan a strategy... and picking out the color stain of Pergo flooring I want in the living room... ;)

Ha, you think thats bad, wait. My three year old now is always taking off his clothes and running through the house naked. We call him The Streak. And for some reason, he has now realized he can use a certain part of his body as a microphone??? It somehow freaks me out when I see him singing N'Sync songs into his *ahem*. Boys are cool, they just can really embarrass their mothers. Oh well, makes me appreciate my daughter sooo much more. ;)

ROTFLMAO! LOL! ROFL!!!

That last comment, about microphones, and N'Sync, was just too much..

*wipes tears from eyes*

I'm afraid, I can't give much advise. But this thread is quite comical. ;)

Ah, now I see. He really might just be too young. I know it's different for everyone, but my pediatrician told me not to even try until my son was 2, but you might want to work on breaking him of that peeing on the floor habit. My son wasn't a total nudist, but hated wearing pants.

GF, that's hilarious! Mine doesn't sing into it, but when he was younger, he used to like to poke it a lot. He'd be taking a bath and pushing it all the way in then laughing when it popped back out at him. It used to make his dad cringe. :D

yeah, I'm thinking about just holding off now, but he has already decided he deosn't like diapers... I wish they made iron, locking ones. Anyway, I will print out your advice and follow it in a few more months! Thanks!

GF

I will never forget the day my son discovered 'it' when he was in the tub. He looked at me with such gratitude... like "Oh WOW! Thanks, Mom!" I'll never forget the look on his face. I think I understand men much better now. ;)

Isla:

I have three boys: 9, 5, and almost 2. I also have a girl age 7. I don't think there is any magic formula. Like most disciplines of life that have any value, I think consistency over time eventually gives results. Boys are harder, but my first two did well enough. My wife and I haven't even tried with the almost 2-year old. However, a couple of weeks ago, he took advantage of a moment of nekkidness to run over to the toilet and let loose. It was a mess to clean up, but I figure that in the big picture it was a step in the right direction and he did it on his own.

I heard of one small tribal culture that simply let their small children run around nekkid. Whnever they noticed the little ones going potty, they would start to play a small musical instrument. Eventually, the children associated that unique musical sound with going potty. Then, at regularly scheduled intervals, the adults would play the instrument and supposedly the children would respond by going potty. Soon enough, the instrument was removed from the process and the children were potty trained.

Unfortunately, I have yet to find a way to apply this method in a house with carpets and furnishings. I wonder if it really works. I guess it only works in the jungle where accidents don't matter :D

I have two boys and a girl.

1st) boy: potty trained at 2; no bedwetting at 4

2nd) boy: potty trained at 6; no bedwetting at 10

3rd) Girl: potty trained at 2; no bedwetting at 4

From my horrendous experience with 2nd boy: the personality of the child determines at what point things mature.

Whatever we did for the 2nd boy did not work, and stressing about it had no benefit, only detrement for all.

For all things: When the child is ready, it will happen, Period.

Opps, forgot to put in what did work, for 1st and 3rd anyway.

I had success with giving lots of fluids while reading books in the bathroom until it was potty time.

And whenever my wife or I had to pee, we would model correct potty technique. "Look how Mommy or Daddy go potty"

For boys, modeling and teaching them initially to sit down on the toilet will save much cleaning time and has its merits (save the Macho "pissing while standing" technique for later on).

Putting a small plastic portable potty in thier bedroom will help too (they are also useful on long car trips).

Good luck!

I have a little boy (Gabe) and he is all most 18 months. About two weeks ago the wife bought him a potty. And if I'm in the bathroom going he will come in there and sit on his right next to me so at least it's a start. He is totally fasinated with his unit as when we change his diaper that is the first place his hands go so he call pull and yank on it. :)

He's a chip off the old block. :D

I have a 3 yr old niece that refuses to use the toliet. She takes massive dumps and runs away when you try to change her diaper. She doesn't mind the stench. She is getting the idea as she wants to dig a hole outside and go there.

Kids are really kind of weird!!!!!!! ;)

You could always wait until they're potty trianed and them adopt them. At least, that's what I did. No dirty diapers for me and I'm not planning on any until I get grandkids!

I don't have a boy, but my daughter is 20 months and loves to look at the potty, but won't use it. She stands in her potty chair. She also loves to be naked. She will go squat in a corner to do her business, but won't use the chair. She even uses the wipes to wipe herself. I don't know what to do with her either!!!!

:eek::)

Rub his nose in it when he misses, then spank him with a rolled up newspaper. Worked for mine.
