A Question for 'old-timers' ;) Will a VL-Bus card work in a regular ISA slot?

Nothing odd about it. As I understand it, VLB is an extension of the ISA spec, so it's backwards compatible (but apperently not forwards).

Great timing. This weekend I'm assemblying a couple of systems from old parts and I'm using VLB-based mobo's. (3 VLB & 4 ISA slots.) VLB cards definitely do not work in ISA slots.

Ahh... the memories. I remember when I had a 486/66 and I thought it kicked major ass because I outfitted it with a VLB video card and Multi-I/O.

And dont' forget how you could make everyone in your neighbourhood jealous by having a whooping 8MB of RAM because they all only had 4 :D
Gotta love it.

ISA cards will work in a VLB slot (Because the front part of VLB is an ISA) but VLB cards will not work in ISA slot.

I had a strange MoBo a long time back... it was a noname board on which I had a VLBus ATI display card. I felt that this card was running slower than expected and at that time I had read somewhere that some crooked board manufacturers had soldered the VL Bus connector on the MoBo without providing any support for the VL Bus. I examined the MoBo and found that not a single track came out from the VL Bus connector... it was a Dummy connector. Therefor the ATI display card was actually running very slow as it was connected on only the ISA part of the socket.

FYI I had tried a Diamond VL bus display card on this same MoBo and there was no display.

I still have somewhere in a cupboard a Weitek 9000 VL Bus display card for which I paid about $1000.
