*A Question for MSI 6309 Users* *BIOS flashing?*

Folks, I've got a MSI 6309 MoBo and just love it. I've had nothing but good luck and it's been stable as hell for me. Here's my question - I've been trying to overclock my Celeron 566 and the highest core voltage setting that I can get is 1.7v. As a result 850Mhz is definitely NOT stable! She's good to go up to 806Mhz but that's it. My current BIOS version is 1.2 and I see that they're up to 1.7. Do the newer revisions address an increase in core voltage settings? Also, my second question - I've never flashed my BIOS and to be honest I'm damned hesitant about doing so (I've got a habit of running into Mr. Murphy at the wrong time!) is there a web site that can show you step by step, in dumb people talk (LOL!) how to flash your BIOS? I aimed this series of questions at fellow Anandtech forum members that have MSI 6309s hoping that I could pick someone's brain, plus I have never failed to get good straight-forward pertinent info. So, c'mon folks - how about helping out a wanna-bee computer geek! 🙂

OK folks, has ANYONE out there flashed the BIOS on an MSI 6309? If so, I'd like to pick your brain!

You won't be able to set any higher voltage for your celery on that board. There is only a +/- 0.2Vcore wiggle room.

I don't know about other benefits, anyone?

Bubba, it's dumb question time again! I was under the impression that the core voltage for the FC-PGA Celerons was 1.65. Is that correct? If so, then whenever I set the voltage selection to auto it sets my 566 to 1.55v, that's not right is it? Anyone out there have any input? Thanks in advance folks!

Celery stock core voltage is 1.5V

You must be thinking about the FCPGA PIII which has a core voltage of 1.65V

Thanks for the info bubba. I wasn't sure on those core voltage numbers. Anyone else have any input. I want to update my BIOS and need a little advice/guidance on flashing. Thanks folks!

Hi,

I remember that MSI urged people to flash their Bios to version 1.5 when it was released, because it solved some compatibility problems with Celeron2's. So you should really update the Bios!

It really isnt difficult to flash the Bios on the MSI 6309 😉
MSI provide clear instructions on how to flash it! It really shouldnt be a problem.

Good luck!

I too have a MS6309, and am very pleased with it. I run a P3e550 o/c'd to 143fsb, bios rev 1.2. I run 1.7V.

Later bios revisions are supposed to help with Celeron2's. MSI's instructions are pretty clear, be sure to make the backup disk they describe, and print the instructions. A pretty good explanation is also HERE

Your voltage issue might be solvable if you can find out which pins and combination of them tells the mobo what to use as the default voltage. by attaching a very small insulated wire between the appropriate pins on the back of the processor, it might be possible to foll the board into setting the default higher, letting you work from there. A similar trick is used by guys who have slot-1 boards and voltage-adjustable slotkets. Maybe someone else will supply the info.

You may not have a voltage problem at all, might be the memory or how it is set. Try enabling SPD in the bios, this often improves memory performance and reduces problems.
