A question for Les Gurus

Alright, permit me a moment to display my ignorance but of course your answers will enlighten me. I am looking to upgrade my decrepit 15 inch monitor. It sucks! I went to Staples and looked at the monitors. While examining the LCD monitors the sales clerk chimed in that LCD monitors were the best for the eyes. I have no problem with that. But why? I noticed that the dots per inch pitch or whatever on the 15 inch lcd monitors were like 30. How can that be better than a crt trinitron flat screen monitor that has 24 or 22 dots per whatever? are lcd monitors an abstraction of capitalism; a scam to get us to buy more when in fcat the technology is not quite up to snuff? As usual any answers to this life's conundrum will be greatly appreciated.

You're certainly paranoid. 🙂

LCDs are easier on your eyes because they don't fade out nearly as much as CRTs do between scans. As CRTs scan vertically, the scanned lines begin to dim quickly, so at any refresh rate much lower than 100hz, you get some level of flickering that can tire out your eyes, in addition to whatever radiation they pump out. LCDs generate a much more solid image.

Also, dot pitch in LCDs is not the same as dot pitch in CRTs. In LCDs, each "dot" equals exactly one pixel, sharp and clear. In CRTs, it's not so simple, "pixels" and grille spaces don't match up like that. (There are no true pixels in a CRT.)

I think they were just trying to sell you the more expensive monitor 🙂

With monitors running at at least 85Hz refresh rate with nice bright tubes I don't think it's much of an issue really.

If you LIKE LCD (or you need to desk space!) then by all means get one but don't base it on what's best for your eyes because ANY screen can give you eye strain after long exposure...
