Configuration:
There is an iPhone setup with an Exchange account
The exchange account's address book/contacts list is used for "personal" contacts
A GAL is used for "professional" contacts (contacts outside the domain have been added to the GAL. eg.)

What shows up in the Address Book/Contacts list on the phone?
A) Personal contacts only
B) Personal and GAL contacts
C) GAL contacts only

Can GAL contacts be updated from the phone?
