A question for Democrats

I don't understand why they claim to be progressive, yet they advocate so many regulations advocated for by big business (see the works of John T Flynn) and an income tax rather than a wealth tax (like a real estate tax with a high marginal rate and a high exemption). Also, I don't know why they support a national (or quasi-national like the Fed) monetary system (the more inflationary the banking system is, the more it hurts the poor).

Fortunately I'm not a Democrat, so it doesn't frustrate me that they're using government in the wrong way to help the poor, but I'm suprised Democrats continue to ask for more income tax, more medicare, more social security for people who don't need it, more nationalization of credit, and more regulations.

Why is it that more Democrats don't ask for a purely redistributive state with no regulations (like a guaranteed minimum income) financed by an ultra progressive real estate tax collected in hard money (gold or silver)?
