I am curretnly with COX CABLE with is a 512 down and 128 up.. However the connection and PL ( PAcket Loss) has been horrible.. I am an online gamer so I need the best connection.. If you havent ever played with pl it is much worse than lag.. Now verizon has come out wiht a package which is 728 down and 128 up... I have dsl at work but 15-20 other computers are all networked at any given time.. MY question is has anyone actually liked cable better than DSL???

Nope. I had AT&T@Home in Iowa, and I have Bellsouth DSL here. DSL is head and shoulders above cable, IMHO.
 
I would look into SDSL, if it's available in your area. You won't get the high bandwidth you get from cable/ADSL, but the latency/packet loss is quite good. I believe typical rates for SDSL are 384/384, which should be sufficient for gaming.

Anyone who says dsl is better than cable or cable is better than dsl is probably a tad misinformed. It all depends on where you live. In some areas cable is better and some dsl offers better service. Talk to people in your town.
 
I have had Pacific Bell DSL for about 6 months. My download speed is 1.5mbps and 128k up. Online ping in TFC or CS is usually 30-60 range. I've rarely had any problems with it. No experience with Cable. But I would reccomend DSL! As soybomb said, It depends on where you live..

Excellent point, it all depends on variables. On average I would say cable is better than DSL in terms of raw bandwidth and price. Here in Portland, Oregon we have AT&T @Home cable Internet but it's not available for my neighborhood yet ("just call back in a few weeks, we'll get to your house eventually" LOL). I have 640K DSL with QWest (the world telecommunications company in the world) and I am satisfied with it but it costs $55/month including my optional ISP.

Once cable arrives, it's bye bye to DSL.
 
I have Roadrunner and it rocks. I ping usually less than 100 on most decent UT servers, and a lot less than 100 on good CS servers. My download speed usually hovers right around 280-300kb/sec.
 
Got Charter cable here and it rocks! I had SWBell DSL for a year, then they sold their subscriber base to Prodigy, who promptly screwed the system up. Been on Charter now for about 8 months, and I get constant 150+KB/sec downloads, peaking at 700(!). Uploads are capped at 128Kb though... 🙁

Bellsouth Fastaccess IFITL 'Fiber In The Loop'. Not exactly ADSL but close enough. I get excellent bandwidth hovering around 1350kbps down 280-300kbps up and since it is an almost total fiber connection to me from the CO(lucky me I guess) I do not get any RF or noise problems. It beats roadrunner cable and covad adsl that I have used. It does go down on average 4-5 hours a week, mostly overnight, but at speeds nearly equal to the 750 dollar T1 at the office for 49.99 a month, I wont bitch.
 
Yea I've got both 384/384 SDSL and @home cable. Cable is far superior, much faster downloads and it acutally pings better even though my POP for DSL is in San Francisco and I'm in San Jose.
 
I honestly don't know about my packet loss and latency (San Diego @home, but DSL here doesn't seem like a good value because I almost always get at least 4000k down 1000k up with @home (i thought they would cap things but I guess not).
 
Get Optimum Online if you're in CT: kickass bandwith, sub-20 pings commonly, NO packetloss, and it's been down 2 times in about 3 years of service (once for an hour, once for about 2 minutes)! $30 a month!!! I get 500KiloByte download most of the time, even from slower sites, and can upload at about 400KB... I've found some superfast sites that I've hit 1.7megabytes before at 😀 couldn't believe my eyes!

I have used AT&T cable and it sucked, then switched to USWest DSL and it was sporatic at best, then Qwest took over and improved greatly... Then I switched to McLeod Cable and its the best I've seen anywhere...
 
i've had both. it's a tough call. you really have to try both at your house. and keep in mind the speed may vary from your friend's a few miles away who has the same service (assuming he's on a seperate block).

dsl seemed less congested during 5-8pm peak hours, but my dsl (ameritech) would only be functional about 85% of the time. they liked to run maintenance on their servers around 4-7am in the morning a few times a week, which really irked me (being an insomniac). and it set me back 49.99/month.

my cable charges less than half that, and it's been solid since early September. I'm on at least 2 hours a day, and as far as I can tell the longest it's been off is for less than an hour in October (due to a plane crash).

i rarely play online anymore, so i can't say which is better for gaming. but check to see if that new sprint ion is available where you live. hope this helps.
 
I have RCN which is GREAT after aol dialup for 3 years,

it is absolutely great until it goes on the fritz every once in a while and CS is unplayable. generally it is great and much faster than any of my friends DSL
 
My god man.
Verizon is scary stuff!
It really varies.
If you are in a very busy area, with many people on the network, its not going to be as reliable.
More rural areas, and within a decent looplength, have rather good service.
But verizon service is not the way to go.
If you want gaming.
check out
Speakeasy DSL
They are more geared towards gamers.
