i've been trying to run windows98 disc defrag and scan disc, but to no avail. says there are programs running, and restarts every single time. i rebooted windows 98 in what was basically safe mode, made sure no programs are running (which usually takes care of the problem), but still no luck. only program running that i can see when i hit control+alt+delete is explorer. i think there may be a tsr program running in the background (possibly even a virus) that's been preventing me from running defrag or scandisc. i tried removing all spyware, updated norton antivirus and scanned the entire harddrive, no virus's,, still no luck. any suggestions on how i can find out what is running and/or remove the programs?? heck, i don't care if i remove the or not, as long as i can run scandisc and defrag! thanks in advance for all your help!!

The defrag that comes with Win Me is much better than the one that comes with Win98. The file is named defrag.exe. You could also try the scandiskw.exe file as a replacement for your file of the same name. Both of those programs are static (i.e. they don't load any .dlls). Grab copies from a friend.
. Just rename your current files (e.g. defrag.old, scandiskw.old) and then copy the new files into the same folder where your current files are. Also make sure that you have updated your Win98SE with all the important updates and patches from MS. And make sure you have enough free disk space. You need to have about 15% free on each partition for those programs to complete.

Download and run ad aware ADAWARE There is a good chance you have some spyware running in the background. especially if you use filesharing software like kazaa or have precision time installed. If nothing else the program will remove a good amount of the spyware...

If the program you want to run never accesses your hard disks (particularly the partition that defrag is checking) then you should be able to run it while defrag is running. But any program that accesses any disk while defrag is running may cause defrag to restart. It is advisable to use your program scheduler to make scandisk followed by defrag run automatically at times that you know you won't be using your confuser.
