Hi Y'all,
I was looking over an A+ manual today and it gave the following question:
170. Windows 2000 has built in drivers for a USB device you wish to add. All USB ports are active and functional. What is the most efficient (and effective) method of installing the device?
A. Shut down the PC. Plug in the device and start the system. Windows 2000 will automatically recognize the device, install the drivers and activate the device.
B. Plug in the device while the PC is running. Windows 2000 will recognize the device, install the drivers and activate the device.
C. Shut down the PC. Plug in the device, and start the PC. Run the Add/Remove hardware wizard, choose the appropriate driver from the list and restart the PC.
D. Plug in the device, start the system, and run the Add/Remove hardware wizard. Windows 2000 will automatically install the drivers and activate the device

Well, what do you think the answer is? The answer given was "c". I thought USB was hot-swappable and you could do this anytime, so I put "a". Which is correct?
As Always,
D

if it is hot-swappable and hot-detectable, why not b? I've done it with intellimice before, although not when first installing it.

[edit], oh you mentioned the correct answer is D. I'm guessing it's because doing it without adding it via the hardware wizard will only temporarily add it, not perminantly.

It looks like "B" should be the correct answer...

Pretender- He said the correct answer given was "C", not "D".

Choice B always seems to work for me. Isn't not shutting down the computer more efficent than rebooting??

Microsoft's own manual for the USB Wheelmouse Optical says to do B (effectively, the instructions say to do what choice B describes). So I'd pick B.

Well it really depends on the device id say. A Mouse or gamepad id plug in while Windows is on, but for a scanner or printer id shut down, plug it in, and then turn the system back on and install the drivers. One of my A+ books though says to install all USB drivers BEFORE you plug in the component, it also depends on what the instruction manual says. A+ exam has a few stupid questions like that, where its more opinion than a strait answer.

A+ is so gay anyways. Have the stuff they just ask to trick you to see if you can memorize stuff that takes twice as long to do.

Since the drivers are built-in, B should be the correct answer. For other components though that don't have built in drivers, you should install the software first, and then when you plug it in they will be automagically recognized. I usually just leave everything plugged in. If the drivers are installed and they don't get automatically recognized (because I didn't unplug the device) I can just "Re-install drivers" option in the device manager and it will find them.

I would have said B.

Last time I plugged in a USB device it was a scanner and it picked it up without rebooting.
