A question concerning the Shroud of Turin

My question is this;
All science aside, when they wrapped one of the "blankets" around a body would it really have been pressed so closely onto the persons face that it could leave a facial outline so detailed that you could even see the eyes, eyelashes, eyebrows and details of the mustache and beard?
I've always thought the shroud was a fake just because it looked far to detailed to actually be real.

After they slathered on the primitive photographic chemicals * it would cling very well.

"What does God need with a camera?" -- JTK

* from vague memory of some show on the shroud where they came up with a "scientific" explanation of chemicals being used to transfer the image a la silly putty.

Wasn't the Shroud pretty much proven to be a creation of Leonardo Da Vinci? The carbon dating results place its creation in the Renaissance, the face matches up with portraits of Da Vinci when using forensic techniques; the image on the shroud was replicated using dummies, ink made from flowers, and simple photographic devices detailed in Da Vinci's journals, etc.

No. People who believe in it believe it was miracled on there by way of magic Jesus powers.

No.

Also, they have some new research that is opening up the case again. I guess there was a new test done that puts the shroud at around the time of Christ again.

On the subject of Jesus, I've just Read "The God Delusion" and I have to say it is a GREAT book. A must read for anyone who wants to get a more in depth knowledge into the world of Atheism.

Yeah, and I just read "The Catholic Church: A Brief History", and it's a must read for anyone who wants to get a more in depth knowledge into the world of Catholicism.

If I recall correctly, it was the discovery that the part of the shroud that was carbon dated wasn't part of the original shroud - it was a part of a repair. There were also arguments made that the sample was contaminated by bacteria & stuff from over the years, throwing off their carbon dating technique. However, this wouldn't have thrown it off by 1300 years. So, it's still undetermined what the actual date of the shroud is. Too bad the Church won't let them settle it once and for all with a new sample.

I read about that part as well, they claimed it was part of a repaired section. However, x-rays and other tests revealed no disruption in the fabric. Thus, the dating was most likely accurate.

It's certainly a good book about highway construction.

For more general learning, I suggest Life, the Universe, and Everything.

Nope, you got the spirit of the post :)

It's funny how atheists don't want religion pushed in their faces, yet they're usually the most vocal group about making sure you know how much they dislike your views.

...by mentioning a book. And in retaliation you... mentioned a book. What a ridiculous argument.

A teacher in high school said that she didn't want to know if it was real or not. She had faith that it was. :)

How does that expression go? A delusional drug addict is proof that faith doesn't prove anything.

Something like that - you can have a person who's hallucinating, and has faith, 100%, that he can fly. He's still going to plummet to the ground from the 15th story, just like anyone else.
