Lately, when I've said "hey" to a stranger, and as far as I can tell it's been only black males, I get an "alright" in response, but said in such a way, that its a clear substitute "hey". What the hell kind of slang is that? Is this new?

They are all random sounds that shorten the process of what is essentially meaningless smalltalk.

what the hell. Not a single straight response. I guess noone knows, or there's a conspiracy to cover it up?

Hey, Astaroth, no need to start with the sociological analysis. We are all well aware of the "meaningless" of smalltalk, but still fascinated at the variations that people come up with. Clothing is "meaningless" too, shall we start along that path? :)
