I was wondering....

Police, fire, military and more who wear uniforms also have some form of hat - at the very least in their 'dress' uniform.

Is there any significance to wearing a hat? Is there an actual reason or does it just serve as another piece of the uniform to make those wearing them look more "uniform"?

This is true. It is cover because it covers your head. The military spends a lot of time outside in the elements. Cover is protection from the elements. Military custom dictates that you "Remove that cover" upon entering a building. Try standing guard in 35 degree rain for 12 hours without something on your head. Once a military unit is 'Tactical", the headgear becomes protection against shrapnel.

The goofiest thing about the U.S. military is that no one wears their protective mask carrier properly. Everybody wears it slung around the hip. it is supposed to worn under the arm, chest high. For armor vehicle crewmen, this is especially dangerous. the mask is connected to the filter canister by a flexible tube. The canister remains in the mask carrier. If the carrier is on the hip the tube is not long enough to reach the mask when in use. The danger is tension on mask will break the seal on the face. If Bin Laden ever uses chemical weapons, this will cause casualties.

In the army we used to wear it around our left thigh and it's one of the most bulkiest (mostly) useless POS to carry around but I can see where it'll come in handy, during one of those less than .00000001% percent chance, where someone might resort to biological weapon. In that case, I'd say we just nuke the damn bastards and get it over with.

But I think it was one of the place I most often used to stash contrabands and cigerettes during field training exercises.

btw- going back to the topic.

Having everyone dressed the same and having a head cover (hat) gives more uniformed/organized look to it all. Kind of gets rid of the individualization and conforms the mass into a single structuralized team.

Protecting your head against the sun, bugs, shrapnel's, bullets, etc...is helpful depending on the job position/arm services/force that you serve and your introduction to such elements as well.

You'd be surprised how nasty top portion of a human skull is depending on health and grooming care one improvise. In the woods, it's easier to camouflage a head gear than a naked head.
