Some can have 2 evaporators. Others will usually put the evaporator on the freezer side so it get's the bulk of the cooling. A fan will move air from one side to the other. Ever wonder why many refrigerator/freezers have 1 temperature control? That's why. 1 side is controlled by the other.
Personally, I like the 2 evaporator setup. I've got a Samsun "twin cool" system like that. It allows a lot more control over the individual sides than the 1 evaporator setup.
Here's an interesting page on Samsung's "Twin Cooling Technology"
http://www.samsung.com/in/products/refrigerator/technicalinfo/
Of course it's going to be slanted towards using 2 evaporators...
The temperature of the refrigerators with single evaporator system is dependent on the temperature of the refrigerator compartment only, thereby decreasing the cooling capacity in the freezer.
Curiously, I had a call from home one day telling me the refrigerator was getting colder and freezing things, while the freezer was warming up... They kept resetting the temperatures, and it kept putting them back. Called Samsung, they did't have a clue (holiday weekend and most people were out). When I got home, I tried something because of my years with computers (the Samsung is computer controlled)... I rebooted the refrigerator. It worked!!
