A question about Ram

I have two DDR DIMM 184pin slots, And i currently have 512RAM. I can go upto 2gb. But all i really need for right now is 1gb, i heard that it would be better to buy a one Gig stick rather then another 512mb, because it would actually slow down my computer not speed it up? Also i do not know the Model of RAM i currently have all i know is that it is 512mb..? So if some one could help me with this that would be great, cause if i could buy another 512stick rather then a whole 1gb it would save me some cash.

What motherboard do you have? Just buy the 512mb stick if that's all you really need. I would get the 1gb stick if you plan on keeping your computer longer and if you do a lot of multitasking or play games that take up a lot of memory.
