Folks when I used to have Win98, I learned everything I could about the OS so I could streamline it to my advantage. I used to edit the Windows Startup files using the RUN command MSCONFIG and I would shut off all the crap that would start on bootup that I didnt need....Well now with XP PRO, I hit control-alt-del and bring up the TASK MANAGER and click the PROCESSES tab I see all kinds of scary things running and really don't know which of these I need and which I can shut off safely with no reprocussions....Aside from going thru a whole deep trial and error can someone RECOMMEND some of the WIN XP PRO exe's that are running that can be safely shut off??.........I am simply running the OS connected to a small 4 port Netgear hub with 2 other PC's also networked and I really dont want this system to act as a SERVER and don't need any other fancy things running that would slow me down........I just want the PC to act as peer along side the other 2 PC's and I am primarily going to be using this as a workhorse GAMING machine but also run some occassional Desktop Publishing and Photoshop apps on it.
I have currently a 1.4 T-Bird with 60gig Maxtor HD and 256megs of PC133 RAM
Can some of you offer some performance tweaks, tips, and/or suggestions that could help increase performance, lower system overhead or just plain out make my system run quicker and more efficient?
thanks all!!
