A Question About Memory

I have a question that will probably sound stupid and n00bish to many but my question is this: Current mobos often support up to DDR400 for memory which is PC3200--Why then is there up to PC4200 memory if current mobos will not support it? If you used PC4200 in a mobo that only supported up to PC3200, would memory dividers come into effect to make the memory run at or close to 400MHz? (That sounds wrong to me since that would defeat the purpose of the faster ram?). Please clear up my confusion!

They are basically overclocked pc 3200 (I might be wrong) They are made and rated higher because you can push them higher etc.
