A question about laptop hardware

I am kinda new to laptop hardware, i was wondering, a lot of my friends have resonable laptops with good speeds (1ghz+) but they cant play any games, why? Because the video card sucks. Is it possible to have a regular laptop but add a new video card to it? I know some people would say why not buy a gaming laptop (Alienware) but if you didnt want to (or couldnt afford to 😛) what would you suggest for this video card problem?
