A question about Europe and Israel

Israel has been a part of Eurovision for years now and even won once
For the last few days I'v been watching the European Athletics Championship and I'v noticed a few Israelis there.

Israel is obviosly not in Europe, so why are they compeating in the European Athletics Championship and in Eurovision when both are just for countries in Europe?

.. just something I'v been wondering about for a while now

I doubt they're welcome in Middle Eastern sports leagues.

I doubt they're welcome in Middle Eastern sports leagues.

He has a point. The Israel of modern times is an European construct. Seems fair that they would include them, since Israel is essentually a child of the Europeans.

But like the whole middle east they are a part of Asia and should therefor all take part in some Asian sporting leagues.
