A question about connecting through a router

I decided to rearange the setup in my livingroom. I unplugged everything, and I now have it all plugged back in. Prior to this I had 3 computers connected.
The connection came in through my modem. From the modem I had the network cable run to a D-Link router. From this router I had 2 different cables go to 2 different computers. And the router was wireless, and that went to the third computer.
I have re-connected everything, and it won't connect. The only way I can use the connection on this computer it when I wire this computer directly to the modem. So it must be something I am doing wrong with the router.

A Question:
- When I plug the network cable from the router to the modem, does this cable from the connected modem need to go in any particular slot in the router? Does it just go in all the numbered connections like the other cables do coming into it for a connection...or does the cable from the modem go into the WAN slot?

What am I doing wrong, and what can I do to fix this? THANKS!

cable from modem HAS to go in the WAN/Internet port. Everything else you can pick a number from a hat.

Then if things don't work, powercycle in this order.
Modem->Router->each pc.

Thanks. I cant remember if I had it in the WAN port or not when it wasn't working, but it works now.
