i wrote a check to a friend for $216. however, in the area i write out the check amount, i accidently wrote "two hundred and six dollars". so the numeric amount and the written out amount dont match. he noticed this and pointed it out to me.

now my question is, what is this check worth? can he deposit it for only $206? is it an invalid worthless check now? or can he still deposit it for $216, and nothing would happen unless i questioned the withdrawal from my account?

(the next time i see him i'm going to write him a new correct check, but i'm just curious what would happen to this wrong check)

The written amount (in words) is the true value of the check.
Some banks don't take checks that don't match words and numbers, some will take it for the written amount only. Never seen a bank that knowingly accepted a check for the numerical amount if it didn't match the written amount.

Edit: One course you could take (might not work) is have him deposit it as $216, don't mention it and if the teller doesn't notice it AND the check processor doesn't notice it later that day, it will be processed at $216. If you don't dispute, everything will work out. Usually these things get noticed though, either by the teller or the check processing people.

Your bank might return it to him when it ends up in their hands incorrectly written....then he'd get a returned deposit fee from his bank.

Have him give you the check back, write void on it and write another one. No need to ponder something as stupid as this. Some banks may cash it for the amount written in the box, but if that amount is different than the text, I doubt they'd cash it.
