a question about bluray playback on PS3

What I mean is are there HD chips inside to decode bluray movies or is it done using the Cell in software?

it's done using the Cell in a hardware/software configuration. The software is merely programmed to use the Cell to decode, with the different SPE's handling different tasks (i.e. audio and video separate).
