If you really do know someone well then it should be no big deal. There is a tendency to get comfortable with a certain job. We fall into a pattern and dont realize there are better jobs out there if we can just go get them. Maybe your friends might have a line on a better job for you.

I do not know the salary of any of my friends, my coworkers or my family. I have never asked them and none of them have ever asked me. Not even my closest friends.

I frankly do not see anything positive which could come from it, but there are plenty of negatives.

I don't volunteer the info. I tell my Dad, but if friends ask, I tell em I do decent - that's about it.

I do, however, have a friend who loves to tell people how much he makes.

The salary usually don't come up when I talk to friend about jobs. I just got a job fresh out of college recently. When I tell my friends about that, they would congratulate me and then ask me how much my pay will be. I found this a little annoyed. My salary is considerably low, but I am content with the pay. I am happy to take this job with not much experiences.

Do you tell your friends how much you make?

Hell no, nor do I ask my friends how much they make. It's nobody's damned business but your own.

Don't volunteer, but I don't hide it. I am surprised sometimes when my mom asks for some reason but I tell her anyway. The closest I can generally get to a friend's known wages is why Mrsskoorb talking with his wife and then us consulting at length until we've figured it out and also comparing that to the house they live in/ things they've bought, etc. !

Just kidding.

But not really, that is how we guess it.

I used to, until I started getting larger pay raises. A few of my friends still think I make signicantly less than I do (anywhere from $10k lower than my actual pay) because we were in the same boat several years ago and I don't have the heart to tell them I make more now.
